Description/Biography
Stefano Bianca, a Swiss architect and architectural historian, holds a master degree and Ph.D. from
ETH in Zurich and has spent much of his professional life in the Muslim world. As of 1976, he has directed a number of major planning, urban design and conservation projects in cities such as Fez, Aleppo, Baghdad and Riyadh. Since 1992 he has been the director of the Historic Cities Support Programmes of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Geneva, in charge of building up the current
portfolio of area conservation and development projects in Cairo, Zanzibar, Kabul, Aleppo, Mostar and the Northern Areas of Pakistan. Stefano Bianca has widely published in the fields of Islamic architecture, cities, gardens and arts, his most recent books being "Hofhaus und Paradiesgarten" (Munich 1991 and 2001) and "Urban Form in the Arab World -- Past and Present" (London and New York, 2000).
