Abstract

In the light of rapid changes in the Health Care sector and Medical techniques, this study is mainly directed at investigating some of the problems related to Hospital Planning and Design. Jordan is investing a great effort in improving the medical services for its citizens, but there are shortcomings related to the subject.
The aim of this research is to evaluate the existing plans and designs of hospitals in Jordan and more specifically in Amman, where the concentration of hospital beds is high and there is a variety of health care providers, such as the Public Sector, the Educational Sector for teaching and research purposes, and the Private Sector, ... etc. The case studies involved new and old hospitals in Amman.
The evaluation process is based on international design criteria in terms of functional requirements, functional relationships, circulation patterns and space required dimensions, ...etc. Moreover, it examines to what extent these criteria are implemented.
The study was conducted on two major departments of the hospitals; Accident and Emergency Department, and Outpatient Clinics Departments. These departments are considered the first contact point between the community and the hospital.
To make the research more comprehensive, a questionnaire has been prepared and distributed for staff members and patients for each department involved in order to examine their level of satisfaction with the services provided for the patients, and to examine the employees level of satisfaction with the comfortable working environment.
The evaluation which is based on the results of the questionnaires is summarized in the recommendations. Hopefully, this study will contribute to the improvement of the medical planning and design process in Jordan.
