Abstract:
This study deals with the issue of architectural detail, aiming at providing a clear image of the role detailing plays on different levels of architectural product. Thus, enhancing the architect’s connection with the construction process, and integrating technical abilities with the conceptual framework of architecture. A qualitative research method was adapted through analyzing the synthesis of different theories and critical views regarding the evolution of classical and modern architecture and detailing, using known design case studies and based on the relationship between theory and practice.

Throughout the analysis it was possible to identify several aspects of architectural detail essential to the design process, like the functional aspect that deals with technical and pragmatic meanings representing structure, construction and the function of the architectural detail, the aesthetic aspect that deals with semantic meanings representing the logic and reasoning connected to construing and construction embodied in the tectonics of architecture, and the physical aspect that deals with syntactical meanings and their collocation in respect of logic and architectural reasoning that aims at establishing an appropriate esthetical relationship between the parts in order to form an integral whole. Architectural detailing provides the opportunity to unite construction with construction; it also plays an integral role in evolving an architectural and constructional vocabulary, a shape and a style based on the level of connection and the function of the joint, being tectonic or actual or artistic or symbolic, ontological or representational. When architectural detailing lays at the foundation of the design process it generates the conceptual framework of the total product. In this process, the architectural thought and design form an integral body reacting to sensory and perceptive experiences. Thus, it is obvious that architectural design should start from the stage of detailing.

The study concluded to several recommendations which are; first, to broaden the concept of vernacular and local architectural details that represent the essence of local tradition, they should be developed, accumulated and solved forming a continuity in the architectural and constructional thought of a given society. Second, to work on developing a conscious culture of design for the Jordanian architect that regards the architectural detail as a starting and guiding point for the design process and not just an esthetical consideration. And finally, detailing and design philosophy should work together on articulating the project from the part to the whole.
