Abstract:
The enclosed thesis which subscribes the issue of the development of public buildings Architecture in Amman, aims to explore the different Architectural directions that were dominating during the process of designing some of the public buildings in Amman, and also helps us knowing whether these Architectural directions were concentrated on the international direction, the regional direction or a mixture between both directions.
Therefore, the study period from 1923 to 1973 was specified in which 1923 represents the establishment of the modern political form of Jordan, passing by the year 1946, which is a turning point in the modern history of Jordan which represents the independence of the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan, and ends with the year 1973, which represents the beginning of a flourished economical period that lasted until mid eighties of the last century, was chosen. furthermore a certain area that could be described as a triangle in which its heads indicates the three buildings of Amman’s Municipality was chosen.
After studying the numerous methodologies of Architectural Design, starting from the way of developing crafts until the current assiduity in design methodologies, and studying international and regional design directions through knowing the most important Architectural movements and Schools which were used to adopt some of these directions, a theoretical frame, taking possible values of the designer’s intellect, was established. In order to implement this theoretical frame, some of the public buildings, within the suggested period and area, were chosen in order verify the main goal of this study.
In conclusion, this study has pointed out the appearance of the phenomenon in which private buildings were converted into public ones in the period between the years 1923 – 1973. Between the years 1946 – 1973, and after implementing the theoretical frame on three buildings which are: Arab Bank: designed by Diran Waskertshyan, Al-Hussein Cinema: designed by Sayed Kraeam and Green Saloon Building: designed by Fawaz Mohana, it became clear that there were international and regional Architectural directions in dealing with the public buildings within the suggested area, and these directions were not concentrated neither on the regional nor the international directions but they were a mixture of both. |
