Abstract:
Hospitals are the place where people are cured and taken care of. Therefore they are not ordinary buildings in terms of their design. In fact, there are spiritual, cultural, economic, social, and demographic dimensions, which play a decisive and effective role in the appearance of modern hospital building. In order to organize the process of hospital design in so far as an independent science, hospital design should be based on criteria standards that take into account the above - mentioned dimensions.

This study concerns itself with highlighting these criteria, which have been divided into intellectual criteria and functional criteria as following:

First: intellectual criteria that pertain to hospital. They encompass the values and. standards affecting the formulation of this physical environment that assumes a health care and benefit i.e. (hospitals). These criteria constitute cultural social, demographic, and health, dimensions, which, as whole, illustrate the intellectual aspect, which must be made available in these building.

Second: functional criteria and this pertains to the formulation of the physical structure of hospital building " design and technology.² in other words, this aspect is responsible for the provision of the environment for the physical structure in ensure the availability of health care and service mentioned above accordingly, the functional criteria play a big role in establishing this health environment (the hospital).

This does not mean that we neglected the aesthetic or constructional aspects of hospital buildings. They also play a considerable and complementary role therein.
In this aspect, we have approached all matters related to the design of hospital divisions and their inter-relations. We also highlighted the necessity of connecting these two criteria in the course of this study we hope we have been successful in our study represented in the case study of hospital in Jordan in general and in the city of Amman in particular.

In the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan, there has been a noticeable interest in health care and awareness on part of the government. That interest is well manifested by the development of statistical instruments and means of data collection, researches, and field studies in an attempt to enhance, strengthen and enlarge health institutions and consequently establishing specialized hospitals to support those public ones.
The framework and the plan of the study have been set-up. The study came in six chapters. In the first chapter I examined the topic of the study. Chapter two discusses the criteria of hospital design in general. Chapter three discusses the effects of general criteria of hospital design on hospital historical development.
Chapter four deals with the literature of the study that comprise organizational and planning of hospital buildings including the main services that constitute the functional relation existing between the divisions and movements, in the hospital. The chapter also contains change and expansion criteria in addition to the study of adopted functional means within the various divisions.

Chapter five discusses the field study of selected hospitals in the city of Amman i.e. the university hospital (educational) and the specialty hospital (private). The researcher resorted to assessment and comparison between the design criteria of these two hospitals.

He also used questionnaires, made personal interviews and field visits to stand at the real observations of the working staff. Moreover, the researcher referred to reliable reference on hospitals and their characteristics and features.

Chapter six contains the conclusions and recommendations, which the researcher advises to take into account on designing modern hospital buildings or expansion of existing hospitals to when comply with the technical and technological development of medical services hospitals.
