Abstract:
This thesis has studied the architectural development of the residential building types in the Tripoli city in Libya. It tries to identify the factors which have attributed to loosing an architectural types which fits the geographical site of the city, the social and cultural features of the city population. Also, the thesis has tried to identify the social motives which led to the disappearance of certain hypothetical specifications of the architectural types after a small period of being inhabited.
The thesis contents have been divided into six chapters:
- Chapter one: it has included a general definition of this study, its motives, objectives, and structure.
- Chapter two: it has discussed the historical development of the architectural types in Libya according to their geographical, social, and cultural frames.
Chapter three: it has discussed and analyzed the architectural and constructional development of the housing types in the Tripoli city.
- Chapter four: it has included an analysis of the social and architectural status nowadays in Tripoli.
- Chapter five: aims for a field analysis of a modem living types being constructed earlier in the city.
- Chapter six: it includes the recommendation of the study. The recommendation was divided into general, planning, architectural, social architectural recommendations and a recommendation for the future research and studies. It involves, too, four historical, instructional, and architectural distinctive appendices.
Through the results, -it was possible to recognize the factors affecting the styles living quarters in terms of the architectural style. These factors are the lack of consciousness in the city context, environment, and social features when designing. There were contradictions among the hypothesis of some architectural elements in the modem livings and its real use. Also, the architectural synthesis of the department style in the city was similar to that of the traditional housing.
The recommendation of the study was of three planning, architectural, social, and development levels. Some of these important levels are to follow a new housing strategy when planning and performing them. Second, reviewing some laws and decisions concerning measures of the planning and designing, which are related to the land use and the characteristics of living quarters in Tripoli city. The third one, developing the methodology of the architectural and constructional analysis when qualifying the engineering staffs and proceeding *in different studies. |
