Abstract:
This study was conducted to show the influence of architectural identity and environmental structure on the perception of the individual through the theoretical studies of Kevin Lynch on the city. Two different local environments from the architectural identity and the environmental structure side for the study were chosen. These are the city of Amman and the city of Irbid. The nature of the intellectual images formed to the people of these cities was studied. The importance of the study comes from its attempt to help to find a clear and eligible environment of the individual through teaching him the culture of how to read and organize the components of his environment surrounding him. Two kinds of analysis were applied: the theoretical analysis and the practical one the theoretical analysis depended on the historic and functional study of the perception and the city; while the practical analysis on the physical and behavioral study of the people living in both Amman and Irbid.

Through that analysis which depended on the five elements of the city (namely; paths, edges, landmarks, nodes and districts) it was possible to determine the architectural identity and the environmental structure that distinguish each city, and was compared with the results of the questionnaires. The conclusions revealed by the this study was the clearness of the intellectual image depend on the clearness of the architectural identity and the environmental structure.

The recommendations that can be drawn from this study are:
First: the five elements comprising the city must be interrelated; second: the policies of planning and organizing must take the eye-sight and aesthetic dimensions into considerations; last: people must participate in undertaking the decisions of designing and planning
