This research is about the desert settlements in the northern badia, of Jordan, and the urban patterns for these settlements, in order to find out the essential understanding which controls it.

The aim of this research is to discover the effect of the natural environment, and the socio- economical and cultural factors, to form the urban patterns of die desert settlements, through out studying tile effect of these factors on the urban patterns.

The second chapter of this research is discussing the different elements of the natural environment in northern badia, such as landforms, climate, natural resources, and the bio-climatic regions in this badia, then the influences of these elements on tile urban pattern for these settlements.

The third chapter is discussing the main important characteristics of the socioeconomic and cultural factor in the northern badia, then their influences on the urban pattern of the settlements in this badia.

The fourth chapter is discussing the forms of the settlements in tile northern badia, through studying ten different settlements and how tile people themselves are shaping their built environment, then analyzing and criticizing the master plans for these settlements done by the planners.

The fifth chapter is taking Al-Safawi as a study case, to apply the results in the previous chapters to be sure of what did before. So this chapter is discussing the elements of the natural environment, the socioeconomic, and cultural factors and the form of the settlement, then analyzing the urban pattern and visual one of Al-Safawi, and criticizing the plans done by the planners. The sixth chapter is discussing the main results and recommendations of the research.
