Entrances as an Identity
Kostubi, "Entrances as Identity to the Building" would refer mainly to public buildings, because the main entrance is usually a larger than life portal that expresses and shows the way into the building from a long distance.

In other words, the (main) entrance becomes the landmark by which to navigate into the building as well as an expression of the importance or function of the building.

And the size and visual impact of the entrance is not only for the building, but also to show the importance of the officials (people in public office) who go in and out of the building.

In a sense the main entrance is the mouth of the building, if one can see the building as a fabulous creature.

Entrances as an Identity
Thank u Frank
I agree with u on studying the examples of Public Buildings as entrances would b more prominent in the such type. The entrance, being frontispieces of any building, is the obvious means of creating a first impression. It express what the building or space ‘wants to be’ in relation to its environment.
I m planning to take up more of historic examples mostly which have defined gates like forts and palaces and even religious places.
p.s. i liked the simile of creature and building

Entrances as an Identity
Sometimes the definition of entry is not restricted as entry into the building but adds much more meaning when viewed in an urban context E.g. LIC building, CP in NewDelhi by Charles Correa.

Forts and Palaces are one kind of places in which the entries are presumed to reflect the grandeur of the place through their scale, geometry, texture, order etc.

Entries can be classified depending on the building genre such as Religious places, Universities, Crematoriums, Memorials etc and the context in which the building is situated.

Entrances as an Identity
Thanks Sriraj for ur view,
I too m looking at entrances nt only as an element of a building but trying to study its connotation.. meaning what it tries to tell other than its literal function. How entrance is much more than a punture in a wall, n can gives a prelude of what the building is about.

Entrances as an Identity
Kostubi, with reference to your thesis, there is a book by an american architect which tickles at my memory, but the memory is being elusive.
