Mimar Hayreddin

A pupil of Ottoman head-architect Sinan, Mimar Hayreddin (not to be confused with Sinan's predecessor, also named Mimar Hayreddin) is most well-known for the Mostar Bridge ("Old Bridge") in Mostar, the modern-day southern region of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Completed in 1566, the Mostar Bridge was celebrated during its time of construction as an architectural feat for its height. Croatian Nationalists blew up this bridge in 1993, but it was rebuilt using the original 16th c. stones and reopened in 2004. The bridge remains popular today for the local tradition of diving from the highest point of the arch into the Neretva River below.
