Tughlaq, Sayyid and Lodhi monuments in Delhi
Hello,

I am a PG student of Architectural Conservation at SPA, Delhi, and am currently undertaking a research on Tughlaq, Sayyid & Lodhi periods of Islamic architecture in Delhi, but have not found good reading material so far, especially for Sayyid era.

If anyone can recommend any good books, articles etc on the same.

Other relevant suggestions are also welcome.

Shubhru,

It would be helpful to know what exactly you are focussing on this 200 year period of Delhi architecture.

There is very little material out there on the Sayyid period. However significant work has been done on the Tughlaq & Lodi periods.

To begin with, you might find the following articles on Archnet of use:

a) Welch, Anthony. 1996. A Medieval Center of Learning in India: The Hauz Khas Madrasa in Delhi. In Muqarnas Volume XIII: An Annual on the Visual Culture of the Islamic World. Gülru Necipoglu (ed.). Leiden: E.J. Brill.
b) Welch, Anthony. 1993. Architectural Patronage and the Past: The Tughluq Sultans of India. In Muqarnas X: An Annual on Islamic Art and Architecture. Margaret B. Sevcenko, ed. Leiden: E.J. Brill.
c) Welch, Antony. "Hydraulic Architecture in Medieval India: the Tughluqs." Environmental Design: Journal of the Islamic Environmental Design Research Centre 2 (1985): 74-81.
d) Welch, Anthony. 1997. The Shrine of the Holy Footprint in Delhi. In Muqarnas XIV: An Annual on the Visual Culture of the Islamic World. Gülru Necipoglu (ed). Leiden: E.J. Brill, 166-178.
e) Welch, Anthony and Howard Crane. 1983. The Tughluqs: Master Builders of the Delhi Sultanate. In Muqarnas I: An Annual on Islamic Art and Architecture. Oleg Grabar (ed.). New Haven: Yale University Press.

Hi Shubhru,

I guess you must have already exhausted the books I could recommend. However you should get in touch with Paromita. I think she should have a good bibliography on the same, as she did her post-graduate research on Tughlak architecture. I will let you know if I come across anything specific on the Sayyid era.

Hi there,

Thank you very much for your responses, Danny and Ajay. Already went through the Muqarnas essays you have suggested.
I am looking at structural evolution of funerary buildings of these periods, with an emphasis on significance of Lodhi period, and require good set of drawings for my analysis. ASI has a ...ahem...rather useless set, which they are not that eager to part with. If any of you has come across something...

I am also looking at useful articles on analysis of structural behaviour of historic buildings.

Does any one have access to Jstor.com and can help me access some articles from the journal Construction History?

Thanks,
Shubhru Gupta

Hello Ozgur,
I am looking for the article "The Origin of the Persian Double Dome" by KAC Cresswell, in the Burlington Magazine, available at JSTOR.org. I think the article is spread over 2 volumes; I have reference to only one, Vol. XXIV, October 1913 - March 1914. It would be really good if you could send it. Any other relevant article that you think might be helpful is also very welcome :)

Thanx
