Taj Mahal arch geometry
I have a requirement to design an arch similar in shape to the arch seen in the front of the Taj Mahal.

Can anyone tell me the geometric construction of the arch? I have tried to fit an ogive and many other circle-based lines without success.

Thanking you in advance,
Abraham Hanson

Abraham,

The pointed Islamic arch which became known in Europe as the Gothic Arch is made from two arcs without a common centre. If the Taj Mahal is not completely circular in shape, then try forming the shape using two arcs.

Dear Abraham,

Please do not try to "fit" anything. There is ample documentation available on the Taj; use that to ascertain the proportions.

You will find that proportions of the pointed arch varied from one period to another in historic buildings in India. So there is no standard answer.

Shubhru,

Hey, I like your answer. As you say, there are no "standardised" or "standard" proportions.
