Islamic Architecture

The Convivencia, southern Spain 8th to 12th c.
I am an archaeology student about to start research for his dissertation on the interaction between Muslims and Christians in Southern Spain (between the 8th and 12th century).

For this I need information on any research conducted on the formation of Christian/Muslim quarters in Islamic Spain (planned or organic). Any guidance on reading material in English or Spanish would be much appreciated.

You use the word "quarters" which can either mean parts of an urban centre or parts of domestic buildings. Which?

I am looking to concentrate mainly on quarters of settlements or cities, rather than on individual domestic dwellings.

Have you tried the web for architectural and archaeological associations in Spain?

Another way to pick up data is to contact the mayor in the cities in southern Spain? Cities like, Cordoba, Seville, Cadiz, Granada, Toledo, etc.

I also have an interesting two volume text on "Muslim Spain", published by a university press in Holland or Belgium, but was not specifically architectural.

Glick gives a good historiographical overview in From Muslim Fortress to Christian Castle... I also recommend starting w/ Ciudades Hispanomusulmanas by Leopoldo Torres Balbas and then looking at the numerous publications on the archaeology and urbanism of al-Andalus produced by the Casa de Velazquez.

Information will be city by city. For Granada, for instance, you might try the work of Antonio Orihuela Uzal. Heather Ecker's dissertation (Oxford University) on the medieval quarters of Seville, if accessible, would also be useful. The vast majority of the scholarship will be in Spanish, then French, Italian and German.

Daniel,

You may want to consult "Under the Influence," eds. Robinson and Rouhi, a new compilation of articles on the hybrid culture of medieval Spain.

My thesis, which you can order a copy of from the British Thesis Service, deals with the 13th-17th centuries in Seville, later than the period that interests you.

I would also recommend another compilation from a conference held at the Casa de Velazquez some years ago that was published as "Genesse de la ville islamique." I'll look forward to reading your dissertation! Heather Ecker

Daniel,

My dissertation (From Islamic Ishbiliya to Christian Sevilla: Transformation and Continuity in a Multicultural City, 2004) is available online through the University of Texas at Austin Library. The period is later, 11th through 16th centuries.

Titus Burckhardt's book "Moorish Culture in Spain" has a chapter dedicated to the urban layout of Moorish cities.
